Studio Ongarato has designed and coordinated a vibrant collection of art, graphic installations, and visual elements for the W Shanghai hotel. Design elements express the Shanghai’s fusion of cultural influences, rooting the hotel in local context while expressing the W brand.
A three-dimensional neon art installation activates the entry atrium and pays homage to the iconic Lilong laundry tradition. Clothing, the bright lights of Nanjing Road, and futuristic architeciture of Pudong are suspended at different heights from the ceiling. Studio Ongarato commissioned artists Assume Vivid Astro Focus (AVAF) to design an installation in the courtyard that reflects their interpretation of the city. In the diner called “The Kitchen Table”, a local artist named Coozie created a mural called “Hongkou Tales” that commemorates the historical legend of the surrounding Hongkou District. In the hotel’s presidential suite, a custom neon dragon installation extends up through the double height space.
